New single: Ingrid Lovise, "Won't Back Down"
Art direction, photography, and design for the single release.
We have worked with Ingrid Lovise since her debut, so a release starts from what already exists rather than from a blank page. "Won't Back Down" is a harder record than the ones before it, and the visuals moved with it: less soft, more direct, the same artist in a different light. The work covered the single artwork, press images, and the material the release runs on across her channels.
Artwork for a single is a format problem before it is a design one. The cover is black and white, with the title set four times across the frame, so the name reads before the picture does. It is seen first at the size of a thumbnail, in a playlist, on a lock screen, in a story, so the crop, the contrast, and the name have to hold at a few hundred pixels and still stand as a picture at full size. Press images have the opposite requirement: they are cropped by other people, in formats nobody controls, so they are shot with room around the frame and delivered in versions that survive it.
What carries between them is a small set of rules rather than a single image. Type, crop, colour, and how the title sits on a cover, so a release recognisable as hers can change mood without starting again.
Photographed in our studio in Oslo.
We look after the visual side of her work from one release to the next, and we design and run her website and her online press archive, where images, credits, and assets sit in one place for press to use.
